Russian Taken Away By Police

Police in Portugal have taken away a 22-year-old Russian acquaintance of a suspect in the Madeleine McCann abduction inquiry

Police were searching the home of Sergey Malinka in a small cul-de-sac in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz close to where Madeleine was abducted two weeks ago.

Officers also took away a laptop computer and a hard drive from the property.

Gerry and Kate McCann have regularly prayed at the church, about 100 yards away, since their four-year-old daughter's disappearance.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said Mr Malinka had a large number of cars.

Tuck Price, a friend of the Murat family, described Mr Malinka as a "sweet kid" who had set up the suspect's website.

The development came as the estranged wife of suspect Robert Murat said she was "assisting police in any way she could".

Dawn Murat, of Hockering, Norfolk, said she was going through a very difficult time as a result of the focus on her husband.

"I am assisting the police in any way I can," said Mrs Murat in a statement issued via Norfolk Police.

"I have been very concerned about the disappearance of young Madeleine and like everyone else sincerely hope the search for her ends with a positive outcome."

Relatives of Madeleine have launched a fund in her name to help the stricken family - and others who fall victim to similar situations. Backers included former England rugby captain Martin Johnson.

The Leaving No Stone Unturned appeal, based on a website , was kicked off at the Walker football stadium in Leicester.

As well as Johnson, the launch included Esther McVey, a family friend; Madeleine's uncle John McCann and great uncle Brian Kennedy; Dr Doug Skehan; lawyer Rosamund McCarthy and Ann Thomas, from the International Family Law Group.

Madeleine's aunt, Philomena McCann, told Sky News donations made to the fund would help pay for the parents Gerry and Kate to stay in Portugal while the search continues.

Sky News' Lisa Dowd, in Leicester for the launch, said the use of yellow and green balloons represented the colours of hope in Britain and Portugal.

Earlier, Gordon Brown, who is widely expected soon to become Prime Minister, offered "any help" he could to Madeleine's relatives when they went to Westminster to ask for assistance from MPs.

Police have also quizzed the woman said to be Mr Murat's girlfriend, Michaela Walczuch, and her estranged husband, Luis Antonio - although they were both interviewed as witnesses, not suspects.

Mr Murat has told Sky News he is being made a scapegoat for the kidnap.
