Israelis to honor fallen soldiers and terror victims
The State of Israel will stand on Sunday evening and remember its fallen soldiers and those who have been victims of terror.

The number of fallen soldiers totals 22,305, of which 199 fell in last summer’s Lebanon War alone. This includes all those who died since 1860, when Jews first began establishing neighborhoods outside the walls of Jerusalem.

At 8 p.m. a one-minute siren will be heard across the country, which will be followed by an official ceremony at the Western Wall where family members of those who fell in Israel’s War of Independence will be in attendance. National flags will be flown at half mast.

A two-minute siren will open Tuesday morning’s memorial services at 43 military cemeteries across Israel and at the Memorial for Fallen Bedouin Soldiers at Hamovil Junction.

On Tuesday late afternoon Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will attend Ammunition Hill in north Jerusalem, the site Israel took over from the Jordanians during the Six Day War.

Memorial Day will formally end with the traditional torch-lighting ceremony at Mount Herzl, which will also open Israel's 59th Independence Day festivities.
