ALGIERS, Algeria - Now is not the right time for the U.S. to move forward on a once-celebrated deal for civilian nuclear cooperation with Russia, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Saturday.
Her comment increased speculation that President Bush is planning to punish Moscow for invading Georgia, a former Soviet republic, by canceling the agreement. Such a move is being planned, according to senior Bush administration officials, but is not yet final.

"The time isn't right for the Russia agreement," Rice tol ... Read more »

The American Motorcyclist Association said in a statement on its website that 49-year-old Cliff Gullett of Montana was killed in an accident during a time trial at the location, around 185 kilometers (115 miles) west of Salt Lake City.

The AMA said Gullett was competing in the 500cc class during a time trial speed racing event when his bike crashed. Reports said Gullett was aiming to set a record for the fastest two-stroke, two-cylinder motorcycle.

The Salt Lake Tribune cited police investigators as saying Gullett was travelling at 239 miles per hour before the crash.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch warned that "immediate action" must be taken out to assess whether the problem which caused the Boeing 777 accident could affect other aircraft.

It also demanded that Boeing put in place new safety measures to ensure that planes travelling at high altitude in temperatures far below freezing do not suffer a potentially disastrous build up of ice in their fuel systems.

The recommendations were made in a report into the crash in January in which a BA 777 flying from Beijing crash landed short of the runway with 136 passengers and 16 crew on board.

One passenger suffered a broken leg and 12 others minor injuries in the worst aviation accident at Heathrow in more than 30 years.

There are nearly 700 Boeing 777s in service and they are one of the workhorses of the skies for long-haul flights.

They includ ... Read more »

Russia maintains pressure with recognition of Georgian territories
Defying the United States and Europe, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced Tuesday he has signed a decree recognizing the independence of the breakaway Georgian territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Few other nations are likely to follow Russia's lead, but the move is likely to further escalate tensions between Moscow and the West.

"This is not an easy choice, but this is the only chance to save people's lives," Mr. Medvedev said in a televised address a day after Russia's Kremlin-controlled parliament voted unanimously to support the diplomatic recognition.

Medvedev's declaration comes as Russian forces remain in Georgia after a war, staking out positions beyond the de facto borders of the separati ... Read more »

"We included Russia in the Group of Eight (G8) leading industrialized nations. We welcomed and pushed forward Russia's desire to join the World Trade Organization. That is all at risk now," US Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said on Saturday.

In an interview with German weekly Der Spiegel, Gutierrez said that Russia was maneuvering itself into an extremely difficult situation, Reuters reported based on the German text of the interview.

On August 8, Georgian military forces attacked the breakaway region of South Ossetia to retake its control. In response, Russia moved its forces to the region where most of the population has Russian citizenship.

The conflict ended after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a French-brokered ceasefire deal last week.

The US official also urged Russia to consider its current situation for a ... Read more »

Russia has been biding its time, but its victory in Georgia has been brutal - and brilliant

The cartoon images have shown Russia as an angry bear, stretching out a claw to maul Georgia. Russia is certainly angry, and, like a beast provoked, has bared its teeth. But it is the wrong stereotype. What the world has seen last week is a brilliant and brutal display of Russia's national game, chess. And Moscow has just declared checkmate.

Chess is a slow game. One has to be ready to ignore provocations, lose a few pawns and turn the hubris of others into their own entrapment. For years there has been rising resentment within Russia. Some of this is inevitable: the loss of empire, a burning sense of grievance and the fear that in the 1990s, amid domestic chaos and economic collapse, Russia's vi ... Read more »

Robert Gates, the US Defence Secretary, warned Russia today that its actions in Georgia could undermine relations with the United States "for years to come".

But Mr Gates, in a briefing to reporters at the Pentagon, said that there was no chance that America could get militarily involved in the conflict and the US would only send those forces necessary for the distribution of humanitarian supplies.

Giving what appeared to be a relatively pragmatic assessment of the crisis, the former CIA chief said that Russia had taken advantage of last week's eruption of violence in the Caucasus to send a blunt warning to Georgia and other former Soviet states not to get too close to the West.

Despite reports of tense stand-offs around the town of Gori and conflicting reports about Russian troop movements, he also said that Russian forces now appeared to be h ... Read more »

TSKHINVALI, Georgia - Georgian troops launched a major military offensive Friday to regain control over the breakaway province of South Ossetia, prompting a furious response from Russia — which vowed retaliation and sent a column of tanks into the region.
The fighting was the worst outbreak of hostilities since the province won de-facto independence in a war that ended in 1992 — raising fears that war could once again erupt.

Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said a convoy of Russian tanks had crossed into South Ossetia from the neighboring Russian province of North Ossetia ... Read more »

Portuguese police had detailed images of two suspects in the Madeleine McCann case but would not release them.

The e-fits have been finally published 15 months after the three-year-old vanished from her family's apartment in Praia da Luz last May.

The pictures could have played a vital part in helping to eliminate suspects or stop any abductor from fleeing the country with Madeleine.

In the UK, pictures of suspects are released nationwide and printed in as many outlets as possible to help police track wanted people down as soon as possible in the days after a child goes missing.

However, police did not show the pictures to anyone, including Kate and Gerry McCann in the days that followed Madeleine's abduction and insisted a case must be closed before they can release pictures of the suspects.

Yesterday, a friend of the Kate an ... Read more »

The now-public questioning session took place under caution in Olmert's Jerusalem residence on May 2.  Though a gag order had been placed on the investigation at the time, Channel 2 News reported the night before that it involved suspicions of bribery and the transfer of "huge" sums, in cash, from an American businessman.
